The Osaka (大阪) bay area is the spacious area around Osaka’s waterfront where most of Osaka’s harbor business lies. This bay area is mostly made up of man-made islands that are connected via bridges. You can find various important buildings, shopping and entertainment centers here.
Osaka bay area consists of three main parts: Tempozan Harbor Village, Sakishima Island and Sakurajima Island.
Tempozan Harbor Village
This is the first stop that you’ll get to starting from Osaka Station (大阪駅). Tempozan Harbor Village is named after Japan’s (日本) smallest mountain, Mt. Tempozan which is located close to the Tempozan Ferris Wheel. At just 4.53 meters above sea level, it is really quite small.
Not far from the aforementioned Ferris wheel lies Osaka’s Kaiyukan aquarium which is one of the largest in the world. With a whale shark as its main attraction, you can have a fun afternoon together with your family and friends.
Lastly, there is also a large shopping mall called Tempozan Marketplace which houses a special theme park. Naniwa Food Theme Park showcases native specialties (e.g. Takoyaki (たこ焼き) and Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き)) in a very cool atmosphere.
This island is mostly home to the business side of Osaka bay area. However, there are still two big things that tourists can check out.
Firstly, the Cosmo Tower which is the highest building on the island. It has an observation deck at around 256 meters, offering an astounding view of the surrounding sea.
Secondly, you can find the Asia Pacific Trade Center which is connected to yet another large shopping mall. Here, you can also have some fine Osaka style dinner.
This island is not very big and the main thing to look out for is the second most popular theme park in all of Japan, Universal Studios.
Here, you can explore different universes created by the movie producer and easily spend an entire day.
How to get to Osaka Bay Area
There is no one way to do this as the bay area is fairly big, however I will tell you how to get to the three above-mentioned parts.
Tempozan Harbor Village is the nearest stop that you will reach starting from Osaka Station. You can get here using the Chuo Subway Line, only taking about 20 minutes. Going a few minutes further will lead you to Cosmosquare Station near Cosmo Tower.
If you want to visit the Sakurajima Island along with Universal Studios Japan, you can either take a similarly long train ride directly from Osaka Station or get on a ferry starting from the Kaiyukan aquarium.
Takeaway on Osaka bay area
Osaka bay area is a huge playground for everyone to enjoy. Here, you can find things for everybody: amazing family getaways, shopping, dining and individual entertainment opportunities. You can easily spend one or two days here if you want to see everything which I highly recommend.
Osaka is a very diverse city that has a similar number of things to do as Tokyo (東京). You will never get bored here, highly recommended!
That concludes this post, I hope you enjoyed it!
